CHICAGO (AP) — A new lawsuit seeks to block Illinois legislative district maps recently approved by Democrats from taking effect.
The lawsuit filed in federal court Friday says Black residents of East St. Louis were unconstitutionally split up into multiple House districts to help white Democratic incumbents in neighboring districts win reelection.
The East St. Louis Branch NAACP, the Illinois State Conference of the NAACP, and the United Congress of Community and Religious Organizations say thousands of white voters were added to the House district currently represented by Rep. LaToya Greenwood, who is Black. They say that jeopardizes the prospects a candidate preferred by Black voters will win the election.
