A 35-year-old Centralia man is facing multiple charges after allegedly trying to drive off from an early Saturday morning traffic stop in Mt. Vernon.
Mt. Vernon Police say Anthony Barnes was a passenger, but while the driver was undergoing a field sobriety test, Barnes allegedly entered the driver’s seat and attempted to flee. A backup officer prevented Barnes from escaping in the car, but then Barnes allegedly battered the officer and fled on foot. He was caught a short distance away.
During a search that followed, Barnes was allegedly found to have a loaded handgun, cannabis, and methamphetamine. He allegedly refused to give his name, but police later determined his identity.
Barnes was taken to the Jefferson County Justice Center for alleged aggravated battery to a police officer, felon in possession of a firearm, possession of five to 15 grams of methamphetamine with intent to deliver in a protected zone, armed violence, and armed habitual criminal. He’s also being held on a no-bond parole hold from the Illinois Department of corrections.
The original driver was ticketed for driving under the influence.
