A Jefferson County Judge has sentenced a 20-year-old Carrier Mills man to 50 years in prison for attempted first degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm.
A jury found Alonte Beachem guilty of the two charges in June. Beachem was accused of shooting two men in another vehicle during what Jefferson County officials feel was ‘road rage’ on the North Log Cabin Road in Southern Jefferson County in February of last year.
Both of the convictions were for shooting the victim with the most serious injuries, 37-year-old Randy Mewes of Marion. The jury had found Beachem not guilty of a second aggravated battery with a firearm charge in connection with the shooting of 30-year-old Matthew Verkey of Tunnel Hill.
Before the sentencing hearing, Judge Jerry Crisel denied a motion seeking a new trial.
