If you haven’t seen the Smithsonian Institutes Voices and Votes exhibit at the Bryan-Bennett Library in Salem time is quickly running out.
The display along with the companion Illinois Freedom Project and several local displays will be available from ten to seven both Friday and Saturday before it officially closes at seven Saturday night.
Librarian Kim Keller is hopeful the exhibit will have been seen by more than 500 people before it ends.
Keller says the displays entered by local organizations are incredible and enhance many of the components of the exhibit that the Smithsonian designed.
There’s a Women’s Suffrage exhibit that celebrates women who broke ground in Marion County in their various community and public service positions. The Sons of the American Revolution has an incredible flag display, with accompanying interpretation. There’s information from the Daughters of the American Revolution, The American Legion, the Soldiers and Sailors Reunion, the County Clerk’s office and the National Society of the Daughters of 1918, and the National Society of Descendants of American Farmers.
The Marion County Genealogical and Historical Society co-hosted the combined exhibition with the Library.
The Illinois Freedom Project, created by the Lincoln National Historic Site, sheds light on the challenges facing minorities in Illinois, starting before the Civil War.
There is no fee to attend this combined exhibition.
