EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — Evan Hull ran for 126 yards and two touchdowns and Northwestern beat Indiana State 24-6. Hull led the way for a Wildcats rushing unit that surpassed last week’s 117 total yards against Michigan State at the half and finished with 209. The Wildcats (1-1) never trailed, stopping the Sycamores (1-1) in the first matchup between the two programs. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Brennan Armstrong threw for five touchdowns and became the third quarterback in program history to pass for over 400 yards as Virginia beat Illinois 42-14. It snapped Virginia’s 13-game losing streak in non-conference games against Power Five opponents. Armstrong went 27 for 36 for 405 yards, joining Kurt Benkert (who did it twice) and Marc Verica as Virginia quarterbacks who surpassed 400 yards in a game. MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State held on to beat Southern Illinois 31-23 despite losing starting quarterback Skylar Thompson in the first quarter. Deuce Vaughn scored a rushing touchdown with less than two minutes for the final margin. The Kansas State defense forced a fumble on the next possession to seal the win. The Wildcats held the Salukis scoreless in the second half. Thompson appeared to suffer a non-contact injury in attempting to block for running back Vaughn.
