The Marion County Health Department is reporting two new COVID-19 related deaths and 83 new cases over the long Labor Day weekend through Wednesday.
The deaths of a male in his 60s and a female in her 80s bring the total number of deaths since the pandemic began to 139. Health Department Administrator Melissa Mallow says neither of those who passed away was vaccinated. They were not long-term care residents.
Of the new cases, six are long-term care residents, 43 are school age, and six are four years of age and younger. The health department lists 53 of the cases as community spread and 30 infected from a household or close contacts. Eight of the positive cases had been fully vaccinated including four of the six long-term care residents.
There are currently 605 active positive cases in Marion County, including 25 who are in the hospital and three who are on ventilators.
SSM Health in Southern Illinois is now releasing a snapshot each Wednesday of the number of COVID-19 related cases they are treating combined at St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia and Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon. There are currently 47 hospitalized, all but one who are not vaccinated. 18 are currently in ICU/Critical Care and nine on ventilators. None of those patients are vaccinated.
The hospital is reporting 24 deaths since August 1st. Six were vaccinated and 18 were not vaccinated.
