The SC Cougars (22-3) are headed to the Sweet 16 with their Sectional semifinal win at Okaw Valley 7-2. The Cougars jumped out with 3 runs in the 3rd inning on an RBI double from Aiden Dodson and Sebastian Cowger. Dodson would finish going 3-4 with 4 RBI and 2 runs scored to help him on the mound in the win. The righty worked 5.1 innings allowing 2 runs on 2 hits with 9 strikeouts and was effectively wild with 9 walks. Spencer Johannes came in with the bases loaded in the fifth and worked out of the jam as he finished the game. He allowed 1 hit and struck out 3. Brandt Hiestand had the other SC RBI.
The Cougars will advance to Friday’s sectional final in Louisville when they take on National Trail Conference rival North Clay at 4:30. The Cardinals advanced with their 3-0 shutout win over Cumberland.
Also in 1a yesterday, Father McGivney beat Carrollton 9-3, Goreville 8-1 over Woodlawn, Greenfield eliminated Okawville 4-0, Steeleville 9-4 winners over Century.
In 2a sectional semifinals, Freeburg advanced with a 16-1 blowout over Newton and will advance to the finals tomorrow when they play at Cahokia foe Columbia. The Eagles advanced with an impressive 13-2 win over Teutopolis. Paris beat Maroa 3-2, Carterville 1-0 over Nashville in eight innings, Pana fell in five to Sacred Heart-Griffin 10-0.
Mt Vernon’s season ended with a 10-4 loss at Triad in Class 3a.
