Bond set at $1-million for man in shoot-out with Mt. Vernon Police

Bond has been set at $1-million for a man who was shot by a Mt. Vernon Police officer in a shootout between the two early Wednesday morning.

The Jefferson County State’s Attorney’s office issued the warrant for the arrest of 55-year-old Frederick Goss of Mt. Vernon on charges of armed robbery and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Illinois State Police investigators say the gunfire exchange occurred while Mt. Vernon Police were chasing Goss who was a suspect in an armed robbery at a gas station in the 1800 block of South 10th Street in Mt. Vernon. The officer was not injured. Goss was taken to an area hospital for treatment of injuries and
at last report was under guard.

DCI reports a firearm has been recovered along with other evidence tied to the armed robbery.

The State Police investigation is continuing.
