The Class of 2021 graduated at Centralia High School Sunday afternoon.
The 170 graduates were led by Valedictorian Derek Brooks Harlan and Salutatorian Bradley Griffin.
Principal Reid Shipley thanked the staff for keeping school in person as much as possible and noted there was never a report made of COVID-19 being spread from a contact at Centralia High School which he feels is quite a success.
Harlan told fellow classmates it was a really long four years but they finally made it.
“To all of my classmates, I want to wish you all the best in whatever you all decide to do. Life will go on from this point and I don’t anticipate it slowing down for any of us. I hope that all of us are able to find success in whatever we set our minds to. I hope we find happiness in all that we do. Remember to be successful or achieve greatness isn’t necessary to obtain money or recognition, it is to leave those with who you cross paths a little more happiness and hope, ” said Harlan.
Griffin in the final senior remarks thanked the school staff for their bold leadership during a difficult time.
We have just completed one of the most challenging years in history. Each of us has encountered our own challenges along the way. Some worse than others I’m sure. In the end, we have been there for each for the entire way. I believe the bond of the Class of 2021 is strong than any other class ever,” said Griffin.
Shipley also left the class with thoughts about what they have been through.
“Everything in your lives schools, friends, sports, meetings, movies, date nights, you name it, was put on hold. But you persevered. As Principal of CHS, I want to personally congratulate you on your success, hard work, and perseverance, and finally graduation. Congratulations to you!,” said Shipley.
A roll call of the graduates then took place with each coming across the stage to get their diploma. The program concluded with the CHS Spirit son.
The graduation was held inside Trout Arena, but seniors had a limited number of tickets to keep attendance down.
