The Marion County Board has unanimously appointed Sheriff’s Department Lieutenant Andy Garden to finish out the term of Sheriff Rich Stevenson when he retires June 30th.
Stevenson had recommended Garden as his replacement and the board concurred with the choice.
When later addressing the board, Garden said he had large shoes to fill with what Sheriff Stevenson has accomplished. His goal is to build upon what Stevenson has done in the remainder of the term that runs until November 30th of next year.
He has put us in a good position as far as employees, he has hired and put in good people. We do have an uphill battle with this new reform bill. I have full confidence in the employees of the sheriff’s office from the deputies, to corrections, to dispatch. They will take care of me and we’ll take of each other. I appreciate the confidence.”
Garden has filled in as sheriff once before. Stevenson said he had planned to complete his second term and not run again, but moved up his retirement due to the police reform bill approved by the legislature last year.
The board also voted to appoint current Assistant Regional Superintendent of Schools Matt Renaud to fulfill the remainder of Ron Daniels term after he retires on June 30th. The Jefferson, Washington, and Clinton County Boards must also give their approval before Renaud can be officially appointed.
