Marion County Coroner Troy Cannon says an 80-year-old rural Odin man was killed in a fiery single-vehicle crash in rural Odin Tuesday afternoon.

The victim is identified as Jerry Crundwell.

Cannon says Crundwell was traveling southbound on Farthing Road approaching the T-intersection with Community Beach Road when he apparently suffered a debilitating medical condition and lost control of the vehicle.  The car traveled through the T-intersection, through concrete barriers, and continued south along a wooded trail for about 100 yards before coming to a stop and catching fire.

The fire consumed the vehicle and a small area of woodland and pasture grass before being extinguished by Odin Fire Protection District personnel.

Cannon pronounced Crundwell deceased at the scene.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal, Illinois State Police Patrol and CSI, Marion County Sheriff’s Office, and Jerry’s Towing also assisted at the scene.

The accident occurred just before 5:00 pm Tuesday afternoon.

The Rankin/Sutherland Funeral Home in Salem is assisting the family with arrangements.
