Jefferson County Coroner Roger Hayse says two Ames, Iowa women were killed in a single car crash on I-64 east of Mt. Vernon early Sunday morning.
Hayse says the driver was 61-year-old Carmie Sills and the passenger was 61-year-old Theresa Leibold, who was also owner of the car.
Sills was pronounced dead on the scene, while Leibold passed away about an hour after arriving at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.
Hayse says there is no indication why the car left the road and hit a tree head on. The airbags will be studied to try and see if they can offer any explanation.
The crash was reported at 3:57 Sunday morning.
