Five more deaths from COVID-19 reported in South Central Illinois on Monday

There have been five more deaths from COVID-19 reported in South Central Illinois on Monday.

The Jefferson County Health Department reported two deaths in a long term care facility that also saw 18 additional positive cases over the weekend.  The deaths bring the total number of deaths in Jefferson County to 39.

There were also two additional deaths in Clay County, which only saw its first death last week.  They were females in their 80s and a female more than 100 years old.

There was also another death in Fayette County, a male in his 70s.   It is the fourth death since Saturday and the 14th COVID-related death since the pandemic began.

There were 13 confirmed deaths statewide on Monday including one apiece in Richland and Monroe Counties in Southern Illinois.

An additional 2,742 new cases were confirmed statewide.   The Chicago Tribune says the average number of cases confirmed over the past seven days is the highest since the pandemic began in March and is 34-percent higher than the previous week.    The seven-day statewide average is now 2,643.  That beats the old record high of 2,565 set on May 4th and then tied on May 7th.   There is considerably more testing now than there was in May.

Jefferson County reported 23 new positives over the weekend and on Monday in addition to those recorded at the long term care facility.   There are now 151 active cases ranging in age from under 12 to two females in their 70s.

The Wayne County Health Department is reporting 37 new COVID-19 positives over the weekend, most as part of an outbreak in a long-term care facility.  An additional six positive cases were reported on Monday.  There are now 82 people isolating at home and seven who are hospitalized.

Clay County reported nine new cases on Friday and over the weekend ranging in age from their 20s to 90s.
