John Terry Schmitt, 80, of Waltonville, Illinois, passed away at 11:50 am August 10, 2021 at his residence with his family by his side. Mr. Schmitt proudly served his country in the United States Navy for four years. He was the water superintendent at the Village of Waltonville for twenty years. John was a member of Sesser First Apostolic Church and the Waltonville AMVETS. John was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and will be greatly missed.
A Visitation will be held Saturday, August 14, 2021 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Newell Funeral Home in Waltonville, Illinois. A Graveside Service will be held Sunday, August 15, 2021 at 2:00 pm at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn, Illinois with Brother Andrew Bevis officiating. Full Military Rites will be held at the cemetery by American Legion Post #141. Interment will follow. Memorials may be made in John’s honor to the charity of the donor’s choice. In addition to his loving wife of fifty-four years, John is survived by his sons, Kyle Schmitt and wife, Cindy of Okawville, Illinois, Chad Schmitt and wife, Kacee of Waltonville, Illinois, Jared Schmitt and wife, Alfreda of Waltonville, Illinois; grandchildren, Kymberly Schmitt, Cody Schmitt, and Candelyn Schmitt; sisters, Mary Ann Harp and husband, Paul of Carlinville, Illinois, Carolyn Kelly of Carlinville, Illinois; and three nephews.
He was born October 24, 1940 in Joliet, Illinois to the late John and Irene (Osterkamp) Schmitt. John married Betty Newton Schmitt on July 1, 1967 in Carlinville. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his grandson, Daniel Schmitt.
