The Salem Fire Protection District was called out to the southbound lanes of I-57 Saturday night to a semi-truck cab and trailer that were both on fire.

The fire is believed to have started around the rear axle on the tractor portion of the truck and then spread into the cab and to the trailer that had one side wall melted by the heat.

The ownership of the truck was not immediately available.  It was traveling southbound on I-57 at the 110-mile marker six miles south of the Salem exit.  The truck driver was able to get out of the truck safely.

The driver had pulled onto the side of the road and only one southbound lane had to be closed to fight the fire.

The blaze was first reported at six Saturday night.  Firemen were on the scene for about 45 minutes.
