Fatal semi-truck crash on I-57 at Levy Road overpass south of Salem

By WJBD Staff Jul 1, 2021 | 8:50 AM

An Arkansas truck driver was killed early Thursday morning when his truck ran off northbound I-57 into the median and struck the overpass support for the Levy Road south of Salem.

Salem Fire Protection District officials say the driver was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated. He was pronounced dead on the scene by Marion County Coroner Troy Cannon.

Cannon says it appears the driver suffered a medical event before drifting off the road and hitting the overpass abutment structure. He reports it appears the driver died instantly.

Cannon says the truck owned by CalArk was hauling an empty box trailer.

State Police say the preliminary investigation indicates after entering the median for unknown reasons, the semi traveled about 300 feet before it skidded southbound through the grass-covered median and then struck a bridge column that supports the overpass of Levee Road.

The name of the man killed has not been released pending family notification.

The crash occurred at 1:30 Thursday morning.
