An 18-year-old Kinmundy man has been formally charged in Fayette County Court at Vandalia for predatory criminal sexual assault to a person under the age of 13.
Bond for Riley Smith, Junior was set at $50,000 during his first appearance in court on Friday.
Smith was arrested by Farina Police Chief Vernon Rose. He notes that originally it was believed the sexual assault occurred in the Farina Village Limits, but further investigation has pinpointed the location in the rural area in Fayette County near Farina.
Rose says the investigation began on the evening of June 29th when the victim’s parents noticed their daughter was not at home. She was later found walking outside her home.
Rose says the victim and Smith knew each other. With the case now outside the village limits, Rose says he is working with Fayette County Sheriff’s Investigator Ronnie Stevens who is heading the ongoing investigation.
If released on bond, Smith was ordered to have no contact with the victim, her family, or her residence. He will also have to remain on home confinement except to go to court and medical appointments.
A pretrial hearing in the case is set for July 19th.
