The Salem Fire Protection District got a quick knockdown of a fire that began in an electrical outlet early Monday morning.

The department was called to the Lucas Mellenbine residence in the 2700 block of West Main Street when he saw sparks, fire, and smoke in the outlet when he began cooking breakfast.

Fire Marshall Bill Fulton says after melting the outlet, the fire moved to the adjoining wall. Damage was confined to the outlet and a small section of the wall. Smoke from the fire was heavy enough to require the department to use its large fan to pull out the smoke. Fulton says there was no lasting smoke damage.

The fire is being listed as an electrical problem.

There were on the scene for about a half hour beginning at 5:14 Monday morning.
