Unemployment up in Marion County in April

Unemployment in Marion County is up three-tenths of a percent in April from the prior month.  The 5.3-percent rate is still a half percent lower than in April a year ago.

The actual number of unemployed in Marion County increased by 40 over the previous month to 871.   The total workforce also fell by 133 from March to 16,454.

Washington County had the lowest unemployment in the region at 2.3-percent, the same as last month and seven-tenths of a percent lower than in April a year ago.   Clinton County’s unemployment dipped one-tenth of a percent to 2.9-percent and is down three-tenths of a percent from last April.  Jefferson County’s unemployment jumped four-tenths of a percent to 5.5-percent.  Fayette County’s rate was stable at 4.7-percent.  Clay County’s rate fell a tenth of a percent to 4.9-percent.

In the Centralia-Mt. Vernon Labor Market, nonfarm employment increased by 575 jobs since April 2021.  Jobs in Government increased by 375, professional and business services by 150, leisure and hospitability by 125, and information services increased by 50 jobs.  Payroll declines were seen in educational and health services, down 100 jobs, construction down 75, and manufacturing down 50 jobs.
