Governor JB Pritzker is signing a new law banning “ghost guns” in Illinois.
The Governor says criminals are increasingly turning to homemade ghost guns since they are easier to get and don’t require a background check.
“These are unregistered guns with no serial numbers that are often made at home and are assembled from kits purchased online. And they are virtually untraceable. Ghost guns are deadly weapons with horrifying implications.”
State Police Director Mark Kelly says what’s also troubling is that ghost guns are more accessible to young people. At least 2 Illinois teenagers have been charged with possession of a ghost gun already this month, including one case where a loaded weapon was brought to a high school.
Supporters say cracking down on ghost guns is a vital part of combatting gun violence.
