Salem Fire Protection District Firemen were called out twice on Thursday to fight vehicle fires.
The first fire was at 2:43 Thursday afternoon in the Joe’s Pizza parking lot at 404 East Main. An electrical fire tied to the battery had started to catch the back seat on fire when discovered. A bucket of ice water was poured on the fire before firemen arrived and extinguished the fire. There was extensive smoke damage to the interior of the vehicle. The 1998 Mercedes was owned by Thomas Millwood of West Locust Street in Salem.
The second vehicle fire broke out as Matthew Sellers of the 4200 block of Casnell Road in Iuka was driving in the 100 block of North Broadway and a fire broke out in the engine compartment. When firemen arrived, flames were coming out from under the passenger front wheel area. The fire was put out without any interior damage. The call came in at 5:23 Thursday evening.
