Two of the contractors working on $10-million in renovations and improvements to Salem Community High School this summer have gotten a head start.

Superintendent Dr. Brad Detering told the school board Monday night that good progress was made last week on new windows and new lighting.

“The window project they have been working 2nd shift so if you look on the front in the outside of the school building you can see how far they’ve come, they’ve got most of the 1st and 2nd floors done.  They worked on weekends and also picked up on spring break.  Part of that is making sure the various contractors stay out of each others way because we have a big HVAC project going on this summer.”

Detering says the contractor providing the new lighting also began their work over spring break last week.

Detering says a helicopter will be used to remove and place new heating and air conditioning units on the top of the school this summer. He’s confident the work can be completed before school resumes in August.

In other action, the board hired Kendra French as math teacher. She taught once before at the school from 2015 to 2018. Detering reported the All Class Reunion and the induction into the SCHS Academic Hall of Fame went extremely well.
