State Police say two people were injured when a van and SUV collided at the intersection of Old and New US 51 on the north side of Central City early Tuesday morning.

A preliminary investigation indicates that 47-year-old Jason Ashford of Sandoval was traveling southbound on US 51 behind a van driven by 47-year-old Tonya Pannell of Centralia when Pannell ran out of gas and was attempting to coast to the shoulder.  Ashford reportedly failed to slow and struck Pannell’s van n the rear.

Both Ashford and a passenger in his SUV, 48-year-old Brian Berkel of Sandoval, were transported by ambulance to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Pannell and a passenger in her van, 39-year-old Sarah See of Bloomington, Illinois, were not injured.

Ashford was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and for operating an uninsured vehicle.  Pannell was also ticketed for operating an uninsured vehicle.

The crash occurred at 2:06 Tuesday morning.
