The Salem Community High School Board has approved a modified Return to Learn Plan with no masking requirements. Superintendent Dr. Brad Detering is pleased to see the restrictions officially coming off.
“Following CDC guidelines that masks are recommended but there is no enforcement of that. If students or staff are unvaccinated they are encouraged by CDC guidance to wear a mask, but basically if you walk through the hallways of SCHS it looks exactly like it did pre-pandemic. With the small exception of students and staff who opt to wear masks, which is certainly their right and choice and we recognize that and make sure they have a safe environment to do so because now it’s coming down to individual choices.”
Detering says they are still working to provide as much distance as possible between students. He notes those who test positive for COVID-19 are asked to stay home for five days. Detering was pleased to announce as of Monday they had no positive cases of COVID-19.
The school board has added another million-dollar project to this summer’s $10-million dollar improvement projects. The board Monday night agreed to add an estimated $1-million replacement of the heating and air conditioning systems in the vocational program to the other work being completed on the main campus.
The board set high school graduation for Sunday, May 15th, at two pm. The last day of school for non-seniors who have to take exams is May 20th.
In personnel action, the board hired Elizabeth Barnett as the new girls soccer coach. She is a 2019 SCHS graduate. Saegan Phillips was hired as assistant track and volleyball coach.
