The Centralia High School Board of Education approved a consulting contract for solar power, as well as moving closer to the acquisition of 20 acres for campus expansion at the regular February meeting Thursday evening.

Supernova Partners LLC, (which has an electric consulting contract with the school as Affordable Gas and Electric LLC) from Mt. Vernon, is the firm selected to advise the district. Superintendent Dr. Chuck Lane says the company has been involved in several solar projects in the area. According to Superintendent Dr. Chuck Lane.

“Of course, it’s been well-discussed that we are in the process of purchasing 20 acres southeast of our school – so we could use that area to put solar panels. You know we definitely don’t want to put them on the roof – we don’t like that idea at all – so we’re kind of landlocked without buying some additional property so we’ll have to discuss that but the first step will be just getting the property actually bought first.”

Lane said he hopes to finalize the land purchase; “hopefully have a date here soon.”

Principal Reid Shipley told the board that CHS will host the annual IHSA Solo and Ensemble Contest on Saturday, March 5. He said the annual Rotary Honors Night is set for March 14, and that the third quarter ends March 11. He said the spring musical, Shrek, is set for March 17 through March 20.

In other action, the board listened to the monthly report from the Student Council, presented by Senior Ali Kessler, student council president, who told the board the council had participated in several activities recently and reminded the board of the upcoming blood drive on March 3rd.
