A fire that started around the flu heavily damaged the Vernon and Lisa Quandt home at 8833 Quandt Road southeast of Iuka Tuesday afternoon.
Iuka Fire Chief Kenny Eagan says the Quandt’s returned home, saw smoke, and quickly determined by the smell it was not from the wood burning stove. Upon entry, they could hear the fire burning in the attic. When firemen arrived flames had broke through the metal roof around the flu.
Egan says because of the metal roof the fire was unable to vent through the roof. It spread throughout the attic and gutted several rooms in the home below. The fire also moved into the partial basement.
Eagan believes the fire may have started in the flu and spread. The Quandt’s were able to get some items out before the fire spread out of the attic. One of their son’s was treated on the scene for minor smoke inhalation.
Iuka Firemen called Salem, Kell, Orchardville, and Xenia Firemen to the scene for manpower and tanker trucks for additional water.
Kinmundy-Alma Firemen stood by at the Iuka Fire Station in the event of another fire. The fire call came in around noon with firemen on the scene until around 3:45 Tuesday afternoon.
