A mother and small son were extricated from their vehicle by Jefferson Fire Protection District personnel following a two car crash on Route 37 south of Bakersville Road.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputies say a car driven by 30-year-old Samatha Thomas of Ina had run out of gas. Reports indicate she couldn’t push the car out of the road due to no shoulders and a steep drop off the road. As a result, Thomas stayed in the car with her five-year-old son with the hazard flashers on. They had to be freed from the car by firemen. Both were taken to SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon for treatment of apparent minor injuries.

The car was hit in the rear by a 16-year-old male juvenile from Benton after he had just completed passing another vehicle. The juvenile was not injured. He was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

The crash occurred at 9:43 Sunday night.
