EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — .Johnny Davis had a game-high 25 points as No. 14 Wisconsin beat No. 17 Michigan State 70-62. The win lifts the second-place Badgers (19-4 overall, 10-3 Big Ten) to within a half-game of first-place Illinois in the Big Ten Conference. Marcus Bingham Jr. had 15 points to lead the Spartans (17-6, 8-4), who remain in fourth place in the Big Ten. Malik Hal added 12 off the bench. Chucky Hepburn and Tyler Wahl both added 11 points for the Badgers.
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (AP) — Hunter Dickinson scored 19 points and matched a career best with 15 rebounds to lead Michigan to a 58-57 victory over Penn State. Michigan (12-9, 6-5 Big Ten) never trailed in the second half, but Penn State’s John Harrar made a pair of free throws to tie it at 48. The Wolverines answered with an 8-3 surge and led 56-51 with eight seconds to play. Jalen Pickett scored 14 points and Sessoms had 13 for Penn State (9-11, 4-8 Big Ten), which shot 58% (15 of 26) from the field in the first half but just 24% (7 of 29) in the second.
EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — Boo Buie had 16 points and Chase Audige scored eight of his 12 points in the second half and Northwestern beat short-handed Indiana 59-51 for the Wildcats’ third straight win. Indiana announced before the game that five rotation players — two starters — had been suspended for disciplinary reasons. Five different players scored for Northwestern in a 13-0 run to take a six-point lead about five minutes into the second half and the Hoosiers trailed the rest of the way. Race Thompson scored 14 points for Indiana and Trayce Jackson-Davis had his ninth double-double of the season and finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
UNDATED (AP) — An advocacy group for college athletes has filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board. The goal is to give employee status to college athletes. That would give them the right to competitive pay, collective bargaining and other benefits. The National College Players Association filed the unfair labor practice charges against the NCAA, Pac-12, UCLA and the University of Southern California as single and joint employers of Bowl Subdivision football players and Division I men’s and women’s basketball players. The move comes after the NLRB’s general counsel wrote in a memo she views college athletes to be employees.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa athletic department has apologized to a Wisconsin wrestler who was the target of racially insensitive remarks during a meet at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Austin Gomez tweeted that a racial slur was directed toward him from the stands after his 3-2 decision over Vince Turk in the 149-pound match Saturday. Wisconsin athletic director Chris McIntosh said he was disappointed and angered about the incident. Iowa says the fan could be banned from athletic events if found to have violated its behavior policy.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa athletic department announced Lew Montgomery will serve in an interim role in support of the department’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. Montgomery’s appointment comes after assistant athletics director for diversity, equity and inclusion Broderick Binns accepted a job outside the university. Montgomery has been the university’s Finance and Operation Department’s associate director for diversity, equity, and inclusion and employment experience. He played football for the Hawkeyes from 1989-92. The athletic department has prioritized diversity, inclusion and equity since a 2020 investigation found evidence of racial bias against Black players in the football program.
UNDATED (AP) — No. 23 Murray State will play two games this week with its first AP Top 25 ranking since 2015. The Racers are unbeaten in the Ohio Valley Conference. Coach Matt McMahon says the ranking is a “big deal” and that he has a mature enough team to handle the extra attention. Murray State plays Thursday at Tennessee State, and then visits Morehead State on Saturday. The AP Top 25 schedule includes No. 1 Auburn looking to extend a 19-game winning streak. Second-ranked Gonzaga faces No. 22 Saint Mary’s in a matchup against the week’s other new addition to the poll.
