The Salem City Council Monday night gave final approval to a lease agreement with the Salem Foundation and Mission Salem to utilize the former Save-a-Lot  building until the city is ready to start moving the police department to the building.

City Manager Rex Barbee says the foundation will pay $1 a month rent and the city will pay the utilities. He says the city is currently paying the utility bill and continuing to do so will allow Mission Salem to utilize its funding on building ramps and other projects to assist Salem residents in need. As part of the agreement, Mission Salem has agreed to install an overhead garage door, clean the floor, and remove a few non-support walls.

Council member Royce Bringwald described the contract as a win-win for both the city and Mission Salem. The Greater Salem Foundation Board will vote on accepting the lease at their Tuesday meeting.
