Illinois taxpayers reminded about Earned Income Tax Credit

The Illinois Department of Revenue is reminding eligible taxpayers to make sure they claim the Earned Income Tax Credit when they file their returns this year.

The Earned Income Tax Credit can mean significant savings for qualifying low to moderate wage earners says agency spokesperson Maura Kownacki.

“The EITC can result in refunds of up to $6728 refunds when a taxpayer files a return and has qualifying children.  And up to $1502 for workers with no qualifying children.

But Kownacki says the credit often goes unclaimed.

“Tax payers who are eligible for the federal earned income tax credit automatically qualify for the Illinois credit, but more than 74,000 Illinois taxpayers claimed a federal credit but failed to claim the state credit leaving over $29.8 million unclaimed last year.”
