COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Friday’s top-25 men’s basketball schedule consisted of a pair of Big Ten upsets.
Malik Hall scored 14 points and No. 14 Michigan State beat No. 8 Wisconsin, 86-74 to snap the Badgers’ seven-game winning streak.
Max Christie, Tyson Walker and A.J. Hoggard scored 12 points apiece for the Spartans, who shot 53% from the field.
Michigan State moved into first place in the conference, ahead of the Badgers and Illinois.
Johnny Davis scored 25 points and Brad Davison added 22 for Wisconsin
Illinois now has two consecutive losses since a six-game winning streak.
Donta Scott scored a career-high 25 points and Maryland took advantage of Kofi Cockburn’s absence in an 81-65 victory over the 17th-ranked Illini.
The Illini led 56-52 before Maryland took the lead with a 12-2 run. Scott capped that stretch with a layup and a three-point play.
Fatts Russell had 15 points for the Terps and Qudus Wahab added 11.
Alfonso Plummer scored 18 points for Illinois while Cockburn sat out with a concussion.
McDermott tests positive for COVID-19
UNDATED (AP) — Creighton men’s basketball coach Greg McDermott has tested positive for COVID-19 and will not be with the Bluejays when they play DePaul on Saturday in Omaha, Nebraska.
A spokesman said McDermott is experiencing mild symptoms. He has received two vaccines and the booster.
The Bluejays have had three Big East games postponed because of COVID-19 issues in the opponent’s program. Two have been rescheduled for February.
