Salem Fire Protection District Chief Dave Duncan has released his 2021 annual report showing the department handled 239 calls including 77 fires.

Duncan says fire damage during the year totaled an estimated $691,400 in 18 different fires. The total property saved was placed at $5,750,000. Duncan reports there were no civilian fire deaths during 2021 and one minor civilian fire injury.

Duncan says there were 29 structure fire calls, which is about average over the past five years. In addition, the fire district answered five alarms for cooking fires and two flue fires. The department provided mutual or automatic aid assistance 16 times to various neighboring fire departments and districts.

Duncan says there were 36 highway rescue calls, which is slightly above the five year average. Most of those calls dealt with vehicle extrications and motor vehicle accident assists. There were 18 vehicle fires and nine natural cover or grass fires. There were 48 false alarms or calls and 55 good intent calls.

Duncan says the aggregate number of Salem Fire Protection District’s responses have reflected about a six percent increase over the five year average.
