COVID-19 cases surge in South Central Illinois

The Centers for Disease Control’s COVID tracker is reporting a large increase in number of cases in Marion and all surrounding counties for the week ending
Saturday.

Marion County reported 621 new cases, a jump of 116-percent from the prior week. The county now has an infection rate of 1,669 per 100,000. That’s more than 16 times the number of cases that puts the county in the highest rate of infection. 15-percent of those taking COVID tests last week tested positive. There were 25 new hospitalizations.

Clinton County reported 880 new cases, a jump of 203-percent. The rate of infection is placed at 2,343 per 100,000. The positivity rate for those taking the COVID-19 test is 22-percent. There were two new hospitalizations.

Jefferson County saw 474 new cases, a jump of 155-percent. The rate of infection is at 1,258 per 100,000. Eleven percent of those testing for COVID-19 were
positive. Ten new hospitalizations was reported.

Washington County reported 230 new cases, a 203-percent increase. The rate of infection in the county is placed at 1,656 per 100,00 people. The positivity rate of those taking the COVID-19 test is 29-percent. Three new hospitalizations were reported.

Fayette County had 274 new cases, a jump of 95-percent. The rate of infection is 1,284 per 100,000. Six percent of those testing for COVID were positive. There
were 18 new hospitalizations.

Clay County is reporting 201 new cases, up 56-percent. The rate of positivity is 1,525 per 100,000. 26-percent of those taking the COVID-19 test were positive. There were 15 new hospital admissions.

Wayne County had 181 new or probable COVID-19 cases, up 77-percent. The positivity rate is 1,116 per 100,000. The positivity rate for those taking the COVID
test was 24-percent. There were six new hospitalizations.

The entire state of Illinois remains in the highest category of infection for COVID-19.
