State comptroller to once again give break to struggling taxpayers

For the second year in a row, Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza is announcing a break for struggling taxpayers.

Usually, fines like overdue parking tickets can be deducted from your state income tax return.  But Mendoza says that will not be the case this year for low to moderate wage taxpayers.

“We want to make sure we are really helping and targeting the working class in Illinois.  Giving them a little bit of a break at a time they clearly need one.  That money can be better spent on making a mortgage or rent payment, or frankly paying for medicines in the middle of a pandemic.”

Mendoza says the fines will have to be paid, they are just being deferred.  The break does not apply to unpaid child support which will still be deducted.
