Jefferson County Coroner Roger Hayse says a 66-year-old rural Bonnie man who worked as a custodian and bus driver at the Opdyke-Belle Rive grade school was the victim of a Sunday drowning in a remote pond.

Hayse says an autopsy Tuesday showed James Likens died as a result of affixation due to drowning.

Likens and the Superintendent at the School, Mike Miller, were fishing when their canoe capsized.

Miller was able to swim to shore while Likens never surfaced and was later found on the bottom of the pond in rural Belle Rive via sonar.

Multiple rescue resources and divers were called to the scene to first try and rescue Likens and later to recover his body.

Miller was checked at the scene but declined hospital treatment.
