Salem Community High School Principal John Boles says a credit recovery program has gotten most of the seniors in danger of failure back on track. As a result, he wants to begin utilizing the program for underclassmen.

“This year we have already helped 15 current seniors get back on track to graduate in May.  It’s a computer program after school Monday through Thursday 3:30-5, we have a staff person there if they run into any problems.  We’ve had it for several years and it’s just a tremendous program that keeps seniors in line to graduate and that’s just a huge thing.”

And with only five seniors left to complete the program, Boles is looking to help juniors and sophomores to fill the dozen positions they can handle at any one time.

“We find that kids get in that rut that kids fall behind in failing classes and it gets to the point they ask themselves why am I even trying, I’m 17 years old right now I’ll just get a job and move on.  But that high school diploma is so important, especially in today’s times.”

Boles feels the program has definitely cut the school’s dropout rate. He hasn’t found any students not willing to spend the extra after school time to catch up.
