The State Superintendent of Education Dr. Carmen Ayala quickly removed the Patoka School District from probation after receiving word that the school board Thursday night had changed their Return to Learn Plan that includes the mandated wearing of masks inside and three feet social distancing.
Superintendent David Rademacher received an electronic mail Friday saying effective immediately, the status of the district has been restored to Fully Recognized.
However, Ayala added a warning that ISBE will continue to investigate any complaints of noncompliance. She reports if they determine the district is no longer in compliance with the mandate, the district will be returned to ‘On Probation’ status.
Ayala then thanks Rademacher for immediately addressing this important issue.
The school board that had voted 4 to 3 in June not to following any COVID-19 mitigations, voted at a special meeting Thursday night 6-1 to comply to avoid losing recognition, the freezing of funds, and being unable to participate in post-season sports competition.
About 30 people were at the special meeting. A few continued to speak in opposition to masks, but most indicated they respected the board was in a difficult situation.
