John R. Griffin, 75, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 1:44 am August 27, 2021, at Evelyn’s House in Creve Coeur, Missouri. He was born May 18, 1946, in Saint Elmo, Illinois to the late John and Anna (Justice) Griffin. John married Elizabeth “Libby” (Dorofey) Griffin on August 17, 1968, in Aberdeen, Maryland.
In addition to his loving wife of fifty-three years, John is survived by his son, John Griffin, and wife, Stephanie of Woodlawn, Illinois; daughter, Julie Ritter, and husband, John of Saint Peters, Missouri; grandchildren, Sabryn, Jadyn, and Ashtyn Griffin, Gabrielle and Austin Ritter; brother, Scott Griffin and wife, Sandra of Altamont, Illinois; sister, Janna Goodrum and husband, Tim of Hoopeston, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Griffin proudly served his country in the United States Army. John started working at Mount Vernon Township High School in 1972 as a coach for track, football, and basketball and drivers education, special education, and vocational teacher. He was of the Methodist faith and an avid Saint Louis Cardinals fan. John was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and will be greatly missed.
A Visitation will be held Saturday, September 4, 2021, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at Logan Street Baptist Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Funeral Service will begin at 12:00 pm with Reverend Randy Hayes and Mr. Ron Deforest officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn, Illinois.
