2021 08/24 – Jack E. Applegate

Jack E. Applegate, age 79 of Salem, passed away on Thursday, August 19, 2021, at SSM Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.

Jack was born on January 29, 1942, in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, the son of Edward Curtis and Loretta Christine (Compton) Applegate.  He married Norma Jean (Powless) Applegate on July 2, 1959, in Mt. Vernon and she preceded him in death on September 11, 2010.  He later married Robin (Smith) Applegate on May 19, 2020, in Greenville, TN, and she survives in Salem.

In addition to his wife, Jack is survived by his step-mother, Wanda Fogerson of Louisville, KY; sons, Terry Phillips and wife Laura of Salem, Rick Phillips and wife Gina of Salem, and Curt Applegate and wife Darlene of San Dimas, CA; daughter, Cheryl Puckett and husband Joel of Salem; grandchildren, Blaire, Bria, Max, Ashley, Kali, Brandy, Luke, Chanel, Alex, and Dylan; 15 step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren; step-siblings, Eddie Applegate of Centralia; Sherri Hatchell of Louisville, KY, and Danny Applegate of Nashville, TN.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; a brother, Tim Applegate; and a sister, Sarah Fogerson.

Jack was a member of the Grace Church of the Nazarene in Salem.  He worked as a conductor for the C&EI, Missouri Pacific, and Union Pacific railroads for 35 years retiring in 1997.  He also owned and operated Jacks Tack and Apparel and had a mechanic shop in Salem.  He was known as “Grandpa” to everyone and treated everyone as if they were his own family.

Graveside services for Jack E. Applegate will be held on Tuesday, August 24, 2021, at 5:00 p.m. at East Lawn Cemetery in Salem.  Memorial contributions can be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital and can be left at Crouse Funeral Home in Salem who is assisting the family with arrangements.  Online condolences can be made at www.CrouseFH.com
