The Salem Lady Wildcat Golf Team traveled to Charleston on the 16th to play in Charleston’s Pre-season Invitational 9 hole Scramble.

The competition consisted of teams of 2 girls playing in a scramble format. The scramble format starts with each player on the team hitting from the tee. The team then agrees which ball to play, and both team members hit their second shot from that location. This continues with each shot until the ball is holed. Only one stroke is counted for each chosen shot location. This format is usually played with a strategy that differs from individual stroke play. Often the first player will play a “safe” shot, and the second player will play a shot with more risk. However, if made correctly the risky shot will help the team to incur fewer strokes per hole.

The competition included 33 teams from 12 schools: Effingham (3), Effingham St Anthony (3), Charleston (4), Champaign Central (2), Mt Zion (3), Pana (2), Mahomet-Seymour (3), Mattoon (3), Sullivan (3), Teutopolis (2), Paris (2), and Salem (3).

The Lady Wildcats fielded 3 teams of 2 girls consisting of Kenzie Anderson and Alyssa Paul, Makenzie Mann and Maya Susmena, and Jaryn Haarmann and Kiley Viera. The Lady Wildcats posted scores of 36, 46, and 62 respectively.

The team of Kenzie Anderson and Alyssa Paul won 2nd place with their score of 36 having been edged out of 1st place by Effingham St. Anthony’s team of Ellie Wegman and Lauren Schwing who shot a 35.

In addition to a 2nd place finish the Lady wildcats claimed the straightest drive award won by Maya Susmena.

The Lady Wildcats will begin their regular season play next Wednesday the 25th hosting Herrin at the Salem Country Club.
