2020 US Census Data being released Thursday puts Illinois’ population at 12,822,739 residents. That’s 18,124 fewer than the 2010 U.S. Census. City and county population data has not yet been released.
Illinois is one of only three states to lose population in the past decade. West Virginia had the greatest loss at 59,278 residents while Mississippi saw a decline of 6,018 residents.
Illinois’ new population will cost the state a Congressional District. When the new US House districts are drawn Illinois will have only 17 Congressmen instead of the current 18.
Utah had the biggest percentage increase in population, growing 18.4-percent.
