The Centralia City Council Monday night will once again consider an ordinance amendment to create a city truancy code. No action was ever taken on the request by Police Chief Greg Dodson by the old city council.

The ordinance would make it unlawful for students to be absent without valid cause or to be in public place during school hours. It would also be unlawful for a parent to knowing allow truancy to occur. Dodson wants the ordinance as another tool to get kids into school.

The council will consider a resolution with Curry and Associates Engineers, Inc. to prepare a conceptual plan for a new water treatment plant. The plan will also include raw water supply and arterial water main improvements. The cost is not to exceed $45,000 and will have to be delivered to the city within five months.

A resolution will be presented to authorize the city to enter into an agreement with Enterprise Fleet Management for six 2022 Ford F250 pickup trucks. Five of the vehicles would be used by public works and the sixth by the fire department. City Manager Forrest Langenfeld notes lack of funding has resulted in most of the city’s light and medium duty fleet to be more than 20 years old. The lease would allow the city to cycle out vehicles every four years.

Three public hearings will be held before the regular city council meeting at six. The four pm hearing will provide an opportunity for input on a proposed federally funded Community Development Block Grant that would allow for the rehabilitation of eleven houses. The 4:30 pm public hearing will allow for discussion of a $550,000 Community Development Block Grant to help pay for the cost of replacing part of the city’s raw water line to Carlyle Lake. The final hearing at five will allow public comments on the resurfacing of Gragg Street between Lincoln and Country Club Road. Improvements include widening and reclamation of the existing pavement, resurfacing, a new box culvert east of Franklin Street, ditch grading and entrance improvements.

At the regular city council meeting to follow, the council will be asked to pass resolutions to submit the house rehab and raw water line grants. The meetings and public hearings will all be held at Centralia City Hall. You may also watch the public hearings and council meeting via Zoom.
