Three area counties are in the top five statewide for spring turkey harvest.
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is reporting Jefferson County as the top turkey harvesting county in the state with 421. Marion County is fourth at 332 and Wayne County fifth at 298. Fayette County had 263 birds harvested, Clay County 220 birds, and Washington County 134 birds.
IDNR Deputy Director Rachel Torbert says overall the harvest was down.
“Probably due to weather and overall what those hunting periods look like. We had a total of 13,383 turkey harvested for the spring season. That’s compared to 15,831 last year.”
All of the counties in South Central Illinois saw a decline in harvest this spring.
