Salem Mayor Rex Barbee says the Salem Emergency Management Agency has now been invited to submit an application for recertification.

The announcement came at Monday night’s city council meeting.

Barbee says the city along with Centralia officials with assistance from the Region 9 State EMA Coordinator and State Senator Jason Plummer were able to put together a successful appeal.

“A lot of the decisions that they made was based on community size and the threat of some type of incident happening.  So the threshold for the population was higher than Salem’s population and Terry and ESDA has done a very good job and has been very responsive so during all this time we felt like we were doing the right things and didn’t have a very high threat assessment.”

Barbee says Agency Coordinator Terry Mulvaney is now working on the recertification which is due in early July. He’s hoping for a positive outcome by the end of July which will allow state funding to continue to help fund the agency that provides numerous services to assist various city departments as well as fire and ambulance.
