A Historic Farmers Market debuts for the summer season in downtown Salem on Saturday morning.
Becky Carpenter-Timmerman is turning her parking lot at Benjamin Edwards on West Main Street into the market. She has long wanted to promote such an event, but felt it was even more important following food interruptions during COVID-19 and the recent JBS food plant shutdowns following a cyber attack.
“That made me want to go that much further into if we can buy things locally from people who provide beef, pork, vegetables and the homemade jams and jellies, I just want to give back to the town and try to help people make some money. And supply food to people locally.”
Carpenter-Timmerman says there will be ten vendors along with music on the front porch from Lincoln Trail this Saturday morning from eight to noon.
“I hope this will become so large and so popular that we draw vendors from at least 3 counties and people from everywhere to come and shop at our farmers market. I also have a display case that I will display historical things each week if I have enough to swap it out. This week I will have some original Pearl Harbor memorabilia on display.”
Carpenter-Timmerman says a number of vendors want to know what the catch is, but she says it is true she is not charging anything for a vendor to set up. Those who are interested can contact Carpenter-Timmerman at Benjamin-Edwards or through her Facebook Page. The event is planned from eight to noon
every Saturday through Little Egypt Festival weekend in October.
