The Salem Wildcats are one win away from making more history.
Salem earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Robinson in an IHSA Class 1A Regional semifinal Wednesday night at Richland County High School in Olney, punching its ticket to just the second regional championship game in program history.
The Wildcats delivered their best defensive performance of the season when it mattered most, holding Robinson scoreless despite the presence of striker Hayden Bonnell, the Maroons’ all-time leading goal scorer who entered the contest with 34 goals this season.
The difference came late in the first half when senior captain Payton Gullion found the back of the net off an assist from Noah Gaston, giving Salem a 1-0 lead that would hold up the rest of the night.
Salem’s defensive back line of Isaiah Findley, Liam Shober, Avery Gullion and Payton Gullion played a major role in limiting Robinson’s scoring opportunities and keeping Bonnell in check throughout the contest. Goalkeeper Aidan Winterhalter also delivered a standout performance as the Wildcats turned in a complete defensive effort over all 80 minutes.
The biggest moment came in the closing minutes. With Salem clinging to a one-goal advantage, Bonnell fired a shot toward the upper 90 that appeared destined for the net. Winterhalter came up with an incredible save with approximately two minutes remaining, preserving the shutout and helping seal the victory.
Salem head coach Ben Carrill praised his team’s determination and defensive execution following the win.
“The boys fought all 80 minutes tonight to pull thru a skilled and quick Robinson team,” Carrill said. “Senior Isaiah Findley shut down their best player who had 34 goals on the season, and the entire defense worked all night to deny their quick break away attack.”
Carrill also singled Winterhalter’s late save as key moments in what he described as an amazing team victory.
For the Wildcats, the win represents another significant milestone in the program’s growth. Salem played in its first regional championship game last season, falling to the host school at Rochester. Now, the Wildcats have another opportunity to claim a regional title and advance further into the postseason.
Gullion said the team has worked throughout the season to put together a complete performance and is determined to carry that mindset into Friday’s championship.
“We’ve been trying all year to play a hard 80, and we’ve had our ups and downs, but come playoff time none of that matters,” Gullion told ASATS following the victory. “We are going to enjoy this tonight, but when we wake up it’s on to Friday.”
The Wildcats will now turn their attention to the regional championship, where they will face host Olney at 4 p.m. Friday. The Tigers advanced with a convincing 6-0 victory over Greenville in the other semifinal.
Salem will enter the matchup with confidence after defeating Olney 2-1 earlier this season in Salem. However, the Wildcats will need another strong performance against a Tigers team that has earned its place in the championship.
The opportunity is clear: one more win would give Salem its first regional championship in school history.
In Class 1A, Gibault defended its home field with a 2-0 victory over Anna-Jonesboro to advance to its regional championship.
In Class 2A semifinal action at Mascoutah, the host Indians pulled off a 1-0 upset of Highland, while Waterloo rolled to an 8-1 victory over Granite City.
