It was a HUGE day for Patoka baseball and softball as both were playing at state at the same time for the first time in school history and both teams advanced to the state semifinals with wins.
Patoka/Odin boys won their opener of the Class S tournament at the Oasis Sports Complex in Marion beating Jonesboro 3-1 to advance to the Tuesday semifinal. Noah Cain struck out 123 batters giving up just 3 hits and 1 run over 5.2. Brody Spicer picked up the save. Knox Kuhn singled to center helping the Mohawks tie the game at 1 in the bottom of the 4th. They took the lead in the fifth on an RBI groundout from Nolan Eddy. Grant Eddy and Kuhn had 2 hits each with Grant adding the 3rd run of the game with an insurance RBI. Patoka will play St Joe Olney Tuesday at 3:30 in the second semifinal. New Simpson Hill beat Galatia in their opener and will play in the first semifinal against Valmeyer after they shutout Ewing 10-0.
In Class S softball, Patoka’s Jessa Thalman drove in 4 runs on 4 hits helping the Lady Mohawks beat Carrier Mills 11-9. An error in the 4th gave Patoka 6-5 lead. Patoka then opened up the game scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the sixth thanks to RBI from Mabree Pehlps and Thalman. Phelps was the winner allowing 1 hit and no earned runs over 3.2 with 6 strikeouts. Charlee Murray appeared in relief in the win. Patoka advances to Tuesday’s 2:30 semifinal against New Hope after their 5-3 win over Our Lady of Mt Carmel.
Willow Grove/St Mary also advanced to the Class S Final Four with a 10-1 win over Century. Devyn Dodillet-Tomlianovich went 3-4 including a double as well as allowing just 5 hits and 1 run in her complete game 9 strikeout win in the circle. Destiny Black drove in 3 runs going 2-4. Hayslee Rosol and Vayda Mullinex-Davis had multiple hits as well. The Wildcards will play Tuesday at 4:30 against St John’s Lutheran after their 10-7 win over Waltonville.
In Class L first round baseball games, Carterville beat Marion 4-2, Milllstadt shutout Flora 2-0, Wesclin over Wolf Branch 8-3 and DuQuoin beat Central West Frankfort 6-0.
In Class M baseball opening round games, Goreville over Anna 11-1, Smithton over St Teresa Belleville 8-1, Okawville 12-1 over Woodlawn and Pinckneyville beat St Boniface Edwardsville 16-7.
