The Salem Community High School Board has passed a $14.4-million budget for the current fiscal year that began July 1st.
Superintendent Dr. Brad Detering says they could end up with a nearly balanced budget.
“We have two of our four operating funds that are showing deficits,” Detering said. “We are hopeful that we’ll be able to shrink those deficits, with revenues being anticipated lower and expenditures higher.”
Detering says if there is a shortfall there is $12.3 million in surplus to cover it. The budget includes $1.5-million to continue renovations at the school. The board is looking at replacing the floor tile in many of the classrooms. The improvements will be cashed flow with $1-million from general state aid and the rest by drawing down the surplus.
The board acted on a number of personnel issues. Letters of intent to retire after the 2029-30 school year were accepted from Athletic Director and football coach Kevin Greene and from paraprofessionals Tony Barrett, Jennie Carlton, and Wendy Carlton.
The board accepted resignations from paraprofessional Ashley Wilmoth effective August 18th and from bus driver Meagan Branson effective September 11th.
After a closed session, the board hired Melissa Johnson as a paraprofessional, Linda Collier as a bus driver pending licensure, and Earlene Massey as second shift custodian.
The board was told a recent Red Cross blood drive sponsored by the Peer Helpers collected 73 units of blood.
