Success has become the expectation for the Salem Wildcats bass fishing program this spring, and this weekend presents another opportunity to prove why the program has become one of the area’s best.

As the IHSA State Bass Fishing Tournament gets underway on Lake Shelbyville, the Salem duo of Mya Russell and Kai Graham enter the competition carrying plenty of momentum. The pair has put together an impressive postseason run, capturing both regional and sectional championships to earn their place among the state’s elite anglers.

For Russell, the state tournament appearance comes on the heels of another major accomplishment. Just last weekend, she was part of the boat that captured the ICASSTT State Championship on Springfield Lake, adding another title to an already remarkable season.

Now, Russell and Graham will attempt to carry that winning formula to Lake Shelbyville, where conditions can change quickly and every cast matters. Unlike many traditional high school sports, bass fishing requires a unique combination of preparation, patience, strategy, and execution. Competitors must not only locate fish but also adjust throughout the day as weather conditions, water temperatures, and fish behavior evolve.

The Wildcats have shown throughout the season that they can adapt and thrive under pressure. Winning both regional and sectional titles demonstrated consistency and confidence, two traits that become even more important at the state level.

Salem will be competing against some of the top fishing programs in Illinois, including teams from Goreville, Herrin, Hillsboro, Teutopolis, Du Quoin, Highland, Benton, Waltonville, St. Anthony, Newton, and Triad. Flora will also be represented in the Unified Division.

Friday’s opening round will determine which teams advance to Saturday’s championship finals, where a state title will be on the line.

For Salem, the goal is simple: continue the success that has defined the season. With Russell and Graham leading the way, the Wildcats head to Lake Shelbyville with confidence, experience, and a chance to add another memorable chapter to an already outstanding year for the program.
