Salem Police Chief Tyler Rose has named Sergeant Ian King as the department’s new Deputy Chief.

King first joined the Salem Police Department in 2019 and became a sergeant last April.  He worked at the Marion County Sheriff’s Department as a communications officer and correctional officer for seven years before that.

In making the announcement, Rose cited Sergeant King’s strong work ethic, professionalism, and mentorship of other officers.   He noted that he has supervisory experience and has demonstrated leadership qualities in his performance as a patrol sergeant.  Rose noted that when faced with difficult circumstances, such as last year’s staffing shortages, King never failed to continue working hard and to encourage others to do the same.  Rose says this is the type of leadership that he hopes will continue to serve the department well.  He looks forward to the two working together.

King is looking forward to his new position.

“I’ve worked extremely hard.  I didn’t think it would come this soon, but I got that opportunity to put in for it and wanted to take that opportunity.  It will take me a while to get the hang of it, but I’m pretty confident I can do the job.  Tyler is a good leader to work under, and he’ll be very patient with me learning how to do it.

King is trained in Basic SWAT Operations and is an instructor in L.O.C.K.U.P. arrest and control tactics.  He oversees the department’s field training program and was named Officer of the Year in 2020, 2023, and 2026.

King officially assumes his new duties effective immediately.
